Here's something the remote work discourse won't tell you: the contracts paying $100–$300/hr aren't going to people who've been doing the same thing since 2019. They're going to people who noticed a gap in the market, learned the thing, and showed up ready.
The WFH economy has a dirty little secret — the higher your hourly rate, the fewer hours you actually need to work. A $200/hr contract at 20 hours a week pays better than a $40/hr contract at 50. That math isn't complicated, but the implication is: higher-value skills buy you time. Time you can spend getting even better at the next thing.
The people stuck in the low-rate grind are usually too busy surviving it to climb out of it. That's not a character flaw, it's a trap. The exit is boring and unsexy: one new skill, applied to one new category of work, repeated until your rate reflects it.
You don't need a degree. You don't need six months off. You need a focused block of time and something specific to learn — not "coding" or "AI" in the abstract, but the exact tool or skill that the roles you want are asking for.
The gap between where you are and where the $150/hr contracts live is usually smaller than it looks. It's just not going to close itself while you're watching.
